Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, identified the National Institute of Mental health and Neurosciences, Bangalore in 1990 as one of the centres to be funded for setting up a specialized de addictioncentre under the National Drug De addiction Programme.
The De-addiction Centre at NIMHANS started functioning in 1992.
In 1998, the NIMHANS De-Addiction Centre was recognized as the Regional Centre for the Southern Region by the Ministry and funds were allocated for a separate building which was commissioned in 2002.

The De addiction Centre has been renamed as Centre for Addiction Medicine (CAM) from January 2011.. This centre provides both inpatient and outpatient services to a large number of patients. A recent addition to this is a well-equipped separate Female ward.
This year the Centre for Addiction Medicine has completed its 25 years of clinical service and a year long silver jubilee celebrations has been launched.
